This wonderful wood and polychrome figurine portrays a young girl in a typical kneeling pose on an integral plinth, her left arm lies loosely on her left leg, her right hand raised towards her face, perhaps in a gesture of mourning.  She wears a simple sheath dresss, her long dark tripartite wig is undecorated, the face is soft with wide expansive eyes framed by heavy dark lashes.  A very charming piece.

Similar wood figurines were acquired by the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1913 from the cemetery of Roman Imperial date at el-Deir in the Khargeh Oasis.

Condition:  Some expected minor loss to the polychrome with minor cosmetic touchup to the wig, otherwise intact and in very good condition overall.

Dimensions:  Height:  16.5 cm ( 6 1/2 inches)

Provenance:  Private California collection, by descent to present owner.
