Previous 1 of 2 Next

shown standing on an integral plinth, the head alert and erect, with large plumed tail, good remaining white slip and traces of red pigment.

Iconographic studies by Bruneau and Hoffmann reveal the rooster to be both a symbol of victory (painters of Panathenaic jars freely used the symbol of the rooster in place of Victory, on either side of the magnified hero) as well as having erotic significance since the rooster often denoted amorous conquest.  Fighting cocks are often depicted on vases, paintings and mosaics as being encouraged by Erotes which clearly places the rooster in the realm of Aphrodite.

Condition:  Small break rejoined at the top of the head comb otherwise intact and in very good condition overall with loss to the white slip to one side (as shown in the photos).  A most charming example.

Dimensions:  Height:  13 cm (5 1/4 inches)

Provenance:  Private NY collection.
